ADM and Somerfield take up the 3 Peaks challenge....
No matter what the challenge someone will always take it on and that's exactly what a group of eight directors and employees from ADM and Somerfield did when they scaled Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, Britain's three tallest mountains, in twenty four hours…
That's right, up and down all three mountains in twenty four hours and just to make it more difficult, that includes driving time too. They must be mad… and maybe that was part of the challenge…
The sun was shinning when they set off at three in the afternoon, but within two hours they were using ski poles, trudging through a snow blizzard nearing the top of Ben Nevis and this was just the start. After four and a half hours hard slog they returned through the clouds to the car park, were picked up by the team bus and sped off towards Cumbria for a night time walk up Scarfell Pike.
At two in the morning, with only sheep and the darkness to keep them company the team set off on the second leg. The peak was reached two hours later after climbing the last 500 metres up an almost vertical rock face. But it was worth it to reach the top and see the sun rise, huddled up out of the wind, eating well deserved sandwiches and chocolate bars.
But there was no time to rest. Back down as quick as they could go and on to Wales for the last leg.
Arriving in the car park at the base of Snowdon with just over three hours left to get up and down Wales's highest mountain seemed a tough ask, but they hadn't come this far to fail… Better make it a quick one and that's exactly what they did, up, down and back in the car park by three in the afternoon with smiles all round. They had done it.
Challenge…yes. Success…yes. And then the inevitable question.."What shall we do next?" Well, first off it was a shower, a good meal and a few drinks… and yes plenty of laugher and a good few tales that will make us smile for years to come… What a team… Congratulations to them all.
